During World War I and World War II, the U.S. military permitted personnel to collect and keep enemy items as war trophies or souvenirs. This practice was widespread, seen as a tangible link to their service and proof of their participation in battle. Soldiers collected a vast array of items from German, Japanese, and Italian forces.
