Industrias Aeronáuticas y Mecánicas del Estado (Spanish for "State Aeronautical and Mechanical Industries", abbreviated IAME) was a state entity and autarkic conglomerate of factories of Argentina created in 1951 to promote the manufacture of aircraft and automobiles. In 1956 it was renamed Dirección Nacional de Fabricación e Investigación Aeronáutica (Spanish for "National Directorate of Aeronautical Manufacturing and Research", abbreviated DINFIA).

After completion of the First Five Year Plan the administration of President Juan Domingo Peron had failed to establish a solid foundation for the growth of heavy industry. The trade balance in the automotive heading was unfavorable in 1951, imported around 20,000 units. Therefore Peron met with representatives of major foreign automakers to boost car production in the country. His proposal was rejected by the foreign manufacturers, arguing that Argentina they lacked the necessary expertise for the task and admitting only have a few autoparts Argentina invoice or final assembly in the country of foreign auto parts.

In this situation, the Minister of Aviation, Brigadier Juan Ignacio San Martin, also attending the meeting, proposed to the President producing cars in the country using high industrial knowledge achieved by the Institute Aerotécnica. On the basis of all property until then affected the Institute of Cordoba Aerotécnica ten factories were established:

Fábrica Militar de Aviones (Military Aircraft Factory)
Fábrica de Motores de Aviación (Aviation Engines Factory)
Fábrica de Motores de Reacción (Jet Engines Factory)
Fábrica de Instrumentos y Equipos (Equipment & Instrument Factory)
Fábrica de Paracaídas (Parachute Factory)
Fábrica de Hélices y Accesorios (Propellers & Accessories Factory)
Fábrica de Máquinas y Herramientas (Machines and Tools Factory)
Fábrica de Automóviles (Car Factory)
Fábrica de Tractores (Tractor Factory)
Fábrica de Motocicletas (Motorcycle Factory)
IAME conglomerate took the legal form of company self-sufficient, with a directory, general administration and administrations of factories. The first directory was chaired by Juan Ignacio San Martin. Financing funds came from a loan from the Industrial Bank of Argentina of $ 53,000,000, guaranteed by the State under the doctrine of Peronism.

The IAME had 12,000 workers and managers at the time. There were many projects, following a low-cost policy that allowed mass production to achieve low manufacturing costs. It also acquired licenses to produce locally European automotive models of low cost and easy maintenance-mainly Germans-to ensure expertise in the production and adaptation of use. When licenses were not acquired, projects initiated were highly influenced by the original models in question.

Ae.T.1

The FMA AeT.1 was an airliner built in Argentina in the early 1930s. It was a low-wing cantilever monoplane of conventional design, with fixed tailwheel undercarriage. Only three examples were built, christened General San Martín, Deán Funes, and Jorge Newbery. These aircraft provided Argentina's first scheduled airline services with Aero-Argentina, flying between Córdoba and Buenos Aires. The Deán Funes was also used to make a long-distance flight to Ushuaia, bringing the first mail to that town after a flight of 6,500 km (4,060 miles). Air France director Colin Jeannel flew as a passenger on that flight.

The FMA 20 El Boyero ("Shepherd") was a light utility aircraft produced in Argentina in the 1940s Designed by Juan Peretti. It was a conventional high-wing strut-braced monoplane with fixed tailskid undercarriage with seating for two side-by-side in an enclosed cabin. Design work started in 1939 and two prototypes were built, the first flying in November 1940 and the second early the following year. Plans to put the aircraft into production were put on hold because of FMA's commitment to military production, and the design was sold to Sfreddo y Paolini, who in turn sold it to Petrolini Hermanos. Following the war, this firm received an order for 150 of the type from the Argentine government, and commenced deliveries in January 1949. The aircraft were distributed to Argentina's aeroclubs and to the military, which used it as a spotter aircraft. Petrolini experienced great difficulties sourcing sufficient materials to complete the order, and in 1951 ceased production, having completed 129 aircraft. (Wikipedia).

Sikorsky 5R (Argentina Navy - Naval Aviation)

The Sikorsky H-5, (aka R-5, S-51, HO3S-1, or Horse) (R-5 until 1948; company designation VS-327)
is a helicopter built by Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation, formerly used by the United States Air Force, and its predecessor, the United States Army Air Forces, as well as the United States Navy and United States Coast Guard (with the designations HO2S and HO3S). It was also used by the United States Post Office Department.
In December 1946, an agreement was signed between the British company Westland Aircraft and Sikorsky to produce a British version of the H-5 or S-51, to be manufactured under license in Britain as the Westland-Sikorsky WS-51 Dragonfly. By the time production ceased in 1951, more than 300 examples of all types of the S-51/H-5 had been built.

British version:

The Westland WS-51 Dragonfly helicopter was built by Westland Aircraft and was a license-built version of the American Sikorsky S-51. Apart from military use, it was sold into civilian use.

In December 1946 an agreement was signed between Westland Aircraft and Sikorsky to allow a British version of the S-51 to be manufactured under license in the United Kingdom. These would be powered by the 500 hp Alvis Leonides radial engine. A modified version was also developed by Westland as the Westland Widgeon, but it was unsuccessful.

The Dragonfly entered service with the Royal Navy in 1950 in the air-sea rescue role. A number were also used by the Royal Air Force for casualty evacuation. It was replaced in British service by the Westland Whirlwind, another derivative of a Sikorsky design, in the late 1950s. Fifty-one civilian WS-51s were produced.
